HPE GreenLake: frequently asked questions
Definitions, pricing, competitor comparisons, architecture, and developer answers — the questions buyers and engineers ask most.
HPE GreenLake is an edge-to-cloud platform that brings the cloud operating model to infrastructure you run in your own data center, at the edge, or in a colocation facility. HPE installs, owns, and manages a complete system for you, and you pay a monthly bill based on what you use instead of buying the hardware outright.
Hybrid cloud combines on-premises infrastructure with public cloud so each workload runs in the best location. HPE GreenLake delivers hybrid cloud by giving your on-premises, edge, and colocation infrastructure a cloud experience — self-service, pay-per-use, fully managed — under one control plane that also integrates with public cloud.
Buying outright is a capital expense: you pay for full capacity up front, own the equipment, and manage its lifecycle. HPE GreenLake delivers the same on-premises infrastructure as a service — no large upfront outlay, cost as a monthly operating expense, and HPE owns and manages the hardware for you.
No. Financing is only one part. HPE GreenLake is a managed cloud platform: HPE installs and operates the infrastructure, provides a self-service cloud console, meters actual usage, stages buffer capacity ahead of demand, and manages the full hardware lifecycle. It delivers a cloud operating model on premises — not simply a lease.
HPE GreenLake fits workloads that must stay on premises for data gravity, latency, sovereignty, or cost predictability — virtualization and VDI, private cloud for VMs and containers, databases, backup and disaster recovery, HPC, and data-intensive analytics. For AI, HPE Private Cloud AI (co-engineered with NVIDIA) supports training, tuning, and inferencing of large-scale models with your data kept under your control.
Because HPE GreenLake runs in your own data center, at the edge, or in a colocation facility rather than a shared public cloud, your data and workloads physically stay on your premises and under your control — which directly supports data-residency and sovereignty requirements. HPE also offers sovereign and air-gapped configurations, and we help map controls to frameworks such as GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC 2.
HPE GreenLake uses a consumption-based pricing model. You commit to a reserved minimum capacity billed each month, and usage above that reserve — drawn from pre-installed buffer capacity — is metered and billed at pay-per-use rates, for example per VM, per container, per GB of storage, and per GiB of memory.
Cost depends on the workloads, capacity, and term you choose, so pricing is quoted per solution rather than from a public price list. HPE provides a TCO/consumption estimate, and an EdgeCloudStore specialist will size your reserved capacity and model the monthly cost against a traditional CapEx purchase before you commit. Contact us for a personalized HPE GreenLake cost estimate.
The HPE GreenLake cloud console includes a Consumption Analytics view that shows monthly charges against your requested, installed, and committed capacity, forecasts future usage, and surfaces optimization insights. Costs can be broken down by service and organizational hierarchy for showback and chargeback to teams and business units.
Both bring a cloud experience on premises. AWS Outposts extends the AWS stack and is tied to AWS services and control plane. HPE GreenLake is stack-agnostic — it supports the hypervisors, operating systems, and software you choose (VMware, KVM, containers, bare metal) and is not locked to a single public cloud, while still integrating with AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
HPE GreenLake and Dell APEX are both as-a-service, consumption-based platforms for on-premises infrastructure. GreenLake is a broader edge-to-cloud platform with a mature single control plane (the HPE GreenLake cloud console), unified management via HPE Morpheus and OpsRamp, and a wide catalog spanning compute, storage, private cloud, AI, and networking. APEX centers on Dell storage and VMware-based cloud. For on-premises storage specifically, GreenLake pairs consumption pricing with the HPE Alletra portfolio and built-in data protection.
Azure Stack HCI extends Azure services and management to on-premises hardware and is tied to the Azure control plane. HPE GreenLake is a vendor-neutral edge-to-cloud platform that can actually deliver Azure Stack HCI as a managed, consumption-based GreenLake service — so you get the native Azure experience on fully managed HPE infrastructure without buying the hardware outright.
HPE GreenLake is built around a single cloud platform and control plane that spans five layers: personas (FinOps, IT Ops, DevOps, AIOps), workloads (cloud-native, AI-native, traditional), landing zones (bare metal, VMs, containers, PaaS), infrastructure (multi-vendor compute, storage, network), and locations (edge, data center, colocation, sovereign, air-gapped). Management services like HPE Morpheus, OpsRamp, Compute Ops Management, and the Data Services Cloud Console plug into that platform.
HPE GreenLake exposes public REST APIs that use RESTful principles with OAuth 2.0 authentication and role-based access control. You can automate provisioning as infrastructure-as-code with the official HPE Terraform provider, and integrate with ITSM and DevOps toolchains — including a free HPE Morpheus plugin for ServiceNow. Full API reference and developer resources are published on the HPE GreenLake Developer portal at developer.greenlake.hpe.com.
Yes. HPE GreenLake for Block Storage delivers self-service, cloud-managed block storage built on the HPE Alletra Storage MP portfolio, with a 100% data-availability guarantee option, billed on the same consumption model as the rest of the platform.
Existing customers sign in to the HPE GreenLake cloud console (GreenLake Central) at common.cloud.hpe.com. From that single portal you provision and monitor resources and track cost, capacity, consumption, compliance, and performance across your data centers and clouds.
HPE GreenLake Intelligence adds an agentic framework — an agent registry, intelligent orchestration, and secure governance — across the hybrid estate. HPE OpsRamp provides AIOps-driven observability and automated remediation; you connect environments and use discovery to bring devices under management, then apply monitoring templates and automation. The OpsRamp Operations Copilot can observe AI agents and track token consumption.
